Lahaina Update

West Maui Welcomes You with Respect and Aloha

West Maui looks forward to embracing visitors again. The recent wildfires have left profound marks on our community, with many experiencing unparalleled losses. Our collective heart is heavy for the people of Lahaina, who have faced the devastating brunt of the fires.

However, even in the wake of such adversity, the indomitable spirit of Maui shines bright. Our dedicated staff, many of whom have also been affected, are keen to return to work and rebuild their lives. The warmth, resilience, and Aloha spirit of our island remain undeterred.

Before you dive into the beauty of West Maui, here's what you need to know:

  • Community Impact: The majority of individuals you will encounter during your stay—be it at resorts, restaurants, or local stores—have been directly or indirectly affected by the wildfire. This could mean the loss of homes, family members, cherished pets, or even their sense of security. While they are committed to ensuring you have a memorable stay, they are also on a personal journey of healing and recovery.  The recent wildfires have deeply impacted our community, leaving many grappling with unprecedented losses and challenges.

  • Engage with Sensitivity: While your curiosity and concern are appreciated, please refrain from directly asking individuals if they were affected by the fire. If someone wishes to share their story, be a compassionate listener. If you genuinely wish to help, be prepared to offer some form of assistance or support. Otherwise, a smile, kind words, or a simple 'mahalo' can work wonders.

  • Rights and Respect: As you immerse yourself in the Maui experience, remember this: every person you interact with deserves respect and kindness. While you are here as our cherished guest, no one is obligated to you beyond their professional role. And, as you explore our beaches and natural wonders, you might come across local residents seeking solace in these familiar spots. They are not in your way; they are part of the tapestry that makes Maui unique. Treat them with the same courtesy you'd expect.

  • Awareness and Acknowledgment: Lahaina remains a closed zone, bearing the scars of the wildfire. We request that you not attempt accessing or photographing these areas. As much of West Maui, from Kaanapali to Kapalua, is slowly rebounding, we encourage you to support the many establishments open for business. Your patronage is a beacon of hope in our collective journey of recovery.

Critical Notes for a Respectful and Enjoyable Stay:

  • Patience is Paramount: As West Maui begins to mend; many establishments are in the early stages of reopening. This means restaurants, attractions, and other amenities might operate with limited menus, shorter hours, or reduced capacity.

  • Stay Positive: Understand that everyone is doing their utmost to cater to your needs under these circumstances. It's possible you might experience longer wait times or encounter unanticipated changes. Approach these situations with patience and a smile. Your understanding and good attitude go a long way in uplifting the spirits of those serving you and contributing to the overall positive atmosphere on the island.

  • Be Understanding: Lahaina remains closed, including the iconic Front Street and surrounding areas. We kindly ask you not to venture into or photograph these areas. These sites are not only unsafe but also hold a deep emotional connection to many of our residents. Your understanding and respect during this sensitive time are invaluable.

  • Engage Tactfully: Many in our community are still grappling with the trauma and loss from the wildfires. If someone chooses to share their experiences with you, listen with empathy. Otherwise, a respectful silence or words of comfort are most appreciated.

  • Support & Explore: While Lahaina has endured significant damage, the rest of West Maui, from Kaanapali to Kapalua, is gradually resuming operations. Safeway, Times, and Napili Market are among the grocery stores now open. We encourage you to explore, enjoy, and support the many other establishments across the island. Your patronage plays a vital role in our community's recovery.

  • Be Pono: Pono is the Hawaiian concept of righteousness, balance, and harmony. As you enjoy the beauty and offerings of Maui, please remember that many locals, some displaced by the fires, are your neighbors at resorts and condos. Our beaches, amenities, and roads are shared spaces deeply cherished by residents. Your kindness, patience, and understanding will help ensure a harmonious coexistence.

As we usher in this new phase, we urge you to embrace the spirit of Aloha — a mutual respect and love for all. Your understanding, patience, and support will play a pivotal role in helping Maui heal. Your support, be it through your forthcoming visits, heartfelt messages, or generous donations, has deeply touched us all. We are grateful for the global community that has stood by Maui during these testing times. As we reopen our doors, we invite you to experience the unparalleled beauty of West Maui, its resilient spirit, and the genuine Aloha that makes our island truly special.

Mahalo nui loa for your understanding and support. We sincerely hope you have a wonderful vacation and enjoy every moment of your stay with us.
